Mike's Program
I became aware that I could make a positive impact on my health in 1980. I was twenty years old working my way through college as a waiter. One of my waiter colleagues named John was going to chiropractor school. He drank bottled water and ate what I considered at the time, weird stuff. I sat down with him one day to learn why he was eating this way. He referred me to a couple of books I could buy in the health food store. I went down to the health food store and bought the book Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Nutrition by Dr. David Reuben. Once I finished the book I was passionate about my health.
I carry this passion with me today and it motivated me to start Battaglia Health Store. I have spent the last twenty-seven years refining my health program reading countless articles, books, and publications on health related matters. I have attended numerous seminars and classes as well as consulting with several leading experts over the years. What follows is a short narrative of my evolving health program:
A typical breakfast for me is a three egg white veggie omelet, whole grain sweet potato pancakes or oatmeal with blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and peaches, two brazil nuts, an ounce of pomegranate juice, four ounces of grapefruit juice, and green tea. I take my first set of approximately 25 different vitamins and supplements that have been tailored to my specific biochemistry.
A typical lunch is a turkey or chicken sandwich on whole grain bread with mustard, cantaloupe, berries, or an apple, a handful of cashew nuts, a small salad with walnuts or pumpkin seeds, olive oil and green tea.
A typical dinner is roasted chicken or grilled salmon, whole wheat pasta with tomato sauce and garlic, steamed vegetables or a small salad and green tea. I take my second set of approximately 25 different vitamins and supplements that have been tailored to my specific biochemistry.
I try to eat foods labeled with the USDA organic seal. If I cannot find organic I make sure the food is washed properly. I drink several glasses of filtered alkaline water and green tea a day. I also try to drink at least two glasses of red wine a week. I consume one cup of coffee per day in the morning.
Starting on January 1st, 2004 I began recording the food I eat and my weekly exercise in a diet and fitness software program. This helps me monitor calories, protein, fat, saturated fat, fiber, carbohydrates, and blood pressure. I also wear a body monitor on my right arm that measures the amount of calories I expend. Using the software program with the body monitor I can set goals and accurately manage my weight loss, weight gain, or weight maintenance program.
I have been running and lifting weights most of my life. I started running every week beginning on January 19th, 1998 and have not missed a week. I run three miles, three times a week, mostly on a treadmill. I perform PNF stretching exercises after I finish running. I lift weights on average one to two times per week. I use a training fan to make sure I do new exercises correctly and to review existing exercises. I also have a travel fan that gives me a variety of exercises to do on the road with no or minimal equipment. My goal in 2007 is to workout everyday by doing at least one of the following exercises: running, weight lifting, or walking.
